The crew, having just returned home to the U.S. last night after completing our first leg of production in San Pedro Sula, was met by happy headlines in today's paper.
The Washington Post reported today President Barack Obama has selected Richard Blanco, a poet who will visit Our Little Roses home in San Pedro Sula during our filming this year, to deliver the poem at the upcoming inauguration.
Blanco plans to visit OLR to help Padre Spencer teach his class and co-edit an anthology of poems written by the girls.
No doubt the fact that he has been chosen as the president's poet will excite the girls' interest in Blanco and perhaps spark a fever to learn poetry from him and Padre Spencer.
Needless to say, our crew is also thrilled, and will be watching the public swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 21.
A word about Blanco. Beside being a friend and fellow poet to Padre Reece, Blanco spent his childhood in the states but was born in Spain to Cuban exiles. Blanco's poetry has earned him the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize and the PEN American Center Beyond Margins Award.
